When you move into a new home, it can be a challenge to maximize the potential in each room. Some spaces may just be smaller. Well, there’s still some handy tricks of the trade that can help. Here are several methods that will make your small room look more spacious.
4 Simple Ways to Make a Small Room Look More Spacious
Free up some floor space.
Blank spaces create the appearance of more square footage - especially when those spaces are continuous from one room to the next. Hence the popularity of the “open floor concept.”
If floor space is a problem for your living space, try a multi-purpose sofa. Two of my favorite features about my Home Reserve sectional are:
The modularity. Home Reserve offers small space sectionals that are created by individual armless chairs that allow you to customize your own layout. All you have to do is add or subtract units to fit any size space. It's perfect for rooms with an awkward layout.
The internal storage spaces beneath each cushion. We ditched our DVD tower, basket of blankets, and toy bin because of all that extra storage in our sectional!
Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper is the queen of neutrals and whites. In a video tutorial published by HGTV, Gaines stresses the importance of making a room look “light and airy” by dialing up the white tones. She adds texture, increased lighting, and pops of color to make each living space come together.

Create a feature piece in the room.
Now that you’ve freed up square footage and played with neutrals, it’s time to give your room a feature piece. I never fully understood that until Casey Stoll, one of the talented designers at Home Reserve, took a look at where I’d set up our brand new sectional. There was an entirely blank white wall acting as a lifeless backdrop to the grey-blue fabric.
That’s when she recommended a feature piece - a large piece of artwork or decor with enough visual interest to immediately tie the room together. It was a fun search and seeing the long canvas of trees tipped in gold paint for the first time on my wall truly made it all click into place for me.
This handy hack comes from BuzzFeed: “Placing a mirror across from a window is the best way to reflect light and make the room feel larger.”
There are so many different tricks you can use to make a small room look more spacious. If you feel like the walls are closing in on you and acquiring a larger living arrangement isn’t an option right now, then keep some of these designer tips on hand. Gut the clutter, inspect the lighting, carve out some fresh floor space, and maybe try a new coat of paint.
