6 Tips for Choosing a Color When You're Stuck

When Kayla began the process of getting a new Home Reserve couch, she ordered swatches to choose a color. Her eye was immediately drawn to the Retriever Cypress fabric, but she also wanted to see neutrals because she has a dark green wall. She thought that neutral would be least likely to clash with everything she had.

When she got the swatches home, she put them all over her living room to get an idea of which looked best (this is our #1 tip!). She held them against her rug, art, walls, other pieces of furniture in the room, and to her surprise, Retriever Cypress was the perfect fit! It looked best with what she already had going in the space so she wouldn’t have to repaint, change anything else, or buy anything extra.

The rug looks fresh, the green accent wall is a keeper and the couch plus her chair now have a similar type of fabric so they look intentional together. That is the magic of choosing the right color! 6 Tips for Choosing a Color When You're Stuck:

• Lay your fabric swatch on everything. Look at it with your rugs, pillows, art, pets, collections, anything you plan to keep in that room, and see if it brings them to life. This is highly important. The goal is to make your space feel alive so it is welcoming.

• Check out the color of your favorite clothes. You read that right, if you wear it often and feel good in it, chances are you will love it in your space. Grab your 5 favorite pieces and lay them in the room to get an idea of how they could work.

• Consider fabric types. If you are adding a Home Reserve piece into a room with furniture you already own, look for a fabric type that could be similar. Like in the case above, Kayla had a velvet chair so the Retriever line was a perfect place to pick from. It creates continuity while still being unique. • Pattern/texture on a small swatch will always feel different on a larger scale. This goes for larger patterns and bold fabrics especially. The pattern will be grander as the amount of fabric grows. If you love patterns and bold fabrics but are nervous to use them, try them on a smaller scale, like a throw pillow, ottoman, or accent chair.  

• Consider how you want the space to feel. Neutral and clean. Light and airy. Playful and sophisticated. Dark and moody. Each feeling would use a different fabric. For example, if you wanted a dark and moody space, you would not want to choose a lightweight and bright fabric like Home Reserve's Retriever Bisque. You would stick to something with a bit more grit, like Home Reserve's darker Archetype fabrics or the warm and cozy Maltese fabrics.
